About the Item
A pair of unique antique American Louis XVI style silvered bronze double light figural wall sconces attributed to E.F. Caldwell. Each of the sconces features a central backplate surmounted by a bust of a cherubic figure with curled hair and rounded features. The bust rises above a vertical stem enriched with foliate scrollwork and shell-like ornamentation. Extending from the central support are two scrolling arms, each terminating in a circular drip pan and candle-form light fitting, detailed with fluted candle cups and ribbed collars. The lower section of each sconce ends in a tapered finial decorated with acanthus and cross-hatched patterns.
These sconces are attributed to E.F. Caldwell
Co., the renowned New York lighting manufacturer active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Caldwell’s workshop was known for its use of historical revival styles, with the Louis XVI style being among its most frequently produced, distinguished by symmetrical forms and decorative motifs such as acanthus leaves, ribbon patterns, and classical busts. The use of silvered finishes further reflects the firm’s range of surface treatments, which includes gilding, silvering, and patina.
The Caldwell company supplied custom lighting fixtures to many of America’s finest residences, as well as public and institutional buildings. Their sconces often combined sculptural elements with refined classical ornament, as seen in the modeled busts and applied motifs on this pair. The present sconces align with the firm’s documented production of Louis XVI-style wall lights, showcasing the company’s emphasis on both ornamental detail and functional lighting design.
