Renowned Italian artist and designer, Alessandro Mazzucotelli (1856-1938) is famous for his creations in the field of metallurgy and artistic wrought iron. Born in Brunate in 1856, in the province of Como, Mazzucotelli showed a keen interest in art and metal manipulation from a young age.
It was in the late 19th century, while settled in Milan, the epicenter of creation and design in Italy, that he established himself as one of the great artists of the capital. Mazzucotelli stood out for his mastery of artistic wrought iron, a technique that quickly became the hallmark of his creations. Mazzucotelli thus created a vast collection and experimented with all forms: gates, railings, chandeliers, indoor and outdoor furniture… His style is characterized by its elegance and audacity, with floral and vegetal motifs, curved lines, and numerous details of particular finesse.
Quickly, his collections found their way into the interiors of the most prestigious homes of the time, as well as in important exhibitions in Italy and internationally, including the International Exhibition of Milan in 1906 or the Venice Biennale, where his works were admired and appreciated by critics and the public. Mazzucotelli significantly contributed to the revival of the art of wrought iron in Italy, and to the sophistication of this craftsmanship, which he updated in modern forms that reflected the trend of Art Nouveau, spreading throughout Europe at the time. ~ Maison Rapin

Created while a lead designer for J. Winhart & Co., Ludwig Vierthaler’s cicada themed copper vase showcases the design principles which he developed at J. Winhart in the pre-war years, where emphasis was placed on craftsmanship and the characteristics of the material itself. The vase’s ambiguous quality and use of allegory also shows his uncanny understanding of the dual nature of German life at the time. On the one hand, under Kaiser Wilhelm II, Germany was asserting herself strongly in the Weltpolitik through alliances with other central-European powers and in making grand plans to grow in military strength. With hindsight, Vierthaler’s vase is all the more remarkable for his prescience in the twilight of an empire.
