About the Item

This pair of Georgian style two-light wall scones were made in England during the first part of the 1900s. During the Edwardian era, decorative objects such as these were made from fine material and old-world techniques such as carved wood with matte and burnished gilding creating rich decorative details. Used with candles the pair would have been placed to give light and to reflect light back from similar mirrors and gilded details in a room. Made as a left and right the carving is covered in gesso and smoothed then matte oil gilded with further water burnish gilded details. The carving is set on small tub metalwork which is also gessoed and gilded. These are still candle sconces and have never been wired but it might be possible to wire thru the hollow tubing but would require drilling to the wooden candle cups which are removable. Wear consistent with age and use. There is crazing in the gesso and some cracking but no losses as well as some rub thru to the gilded areas.
