About the Item
Pair of 18th-Century French Giltwood Wall Torchères
France, circa mid–late 18th century
This elegant pair of French wall-mounted torchères dates to the 18th century and exemplifies the sculptural refinement of late Baroque to early Neoclassical decorative arts. Carved from wood and retaining a richly textured gilt surface with areas of worn patina, each torchère is designed in the form of a classical fluted shaft terminating in a scrolling arm that supports a stylized foliate candle cup. The scrolling profiles, acanthus detailing, and tapering vertical elements reflect the influence of Louis XV and transitional Louis XVI ornament, blending movement with architectural restraint.
Originally intended to hold candles, these torchères would have provided both illumination and ornamental emphasis within a grand interior. Their weathered gilding enhances their historic character and underscores their age and authenticity. Striking as sculptural wall elements, they retain strong decorative presence and versatility in both traditional and contemporary settings.
