About the Item
Pair of French Empire Dore Bronze
Patinated Bronze Egyptian Revival 3-Light Sconces/wall lights
Each wall sconce is constructed with a vertically oriented rectangular backplate surmounted by a sculptural Egyptian head, rendered with a striated nemes headdress and stylized facial features rising above a squared capital decorated with a central rosette. The head is rendered with a striated nemes headdress and stylized facial features, rising above a squared capital decorated with a central rosette. Three candle arms project from the upper section, arranged symmetrically with one central and two lateral arms. Each arm terminates in a cylindrical candle nozzle with a drip pan, supported by scrolling bronze branches cast with leaf and bud motifs. A circular laurel wreath is suspended below the arms, framing the central stem. The lower section of each sconce tapers downward and ends in a fan shaped palmette finial, with applied foliate mounts flanking the shaft.
The surfaces combine matte patinated bronze panels with contrasting doré bronze mounts. The central backplate is decorated with applied relief motifs including floral rosettes, scrolling foliage, and elongated leaf forms arranged in vertical alignment. The arms display cast detailing along their curves, with textured veins and molded collars at the candle sockets. The laurel wreaths are pierced, attached at multiple points to the structure. The rear construction shows heavy bronze plates and original mounting hardware, indicating wall mounted use.
These sconces relate to the Egyptian Revival style that gained prominence in France following increased scholarly and public interest in ancient Egyptian art and architecture. French bronze workshops produced lighting and decorative objects incorporating Egyptian heads, lotus forms, and classical symbols adapted to interior furnishings. The combination of doré and patinated bronze reflects production techniques used to create visual contrast and surface definition in decorative metalwork of this type.
