About the Item

A grand and finely cast pair of French Empire style ormolu and patinated bronze three-arm figural wall sconces. Each sconce centers on a striking classical maiden, beautifully rendered in dark patinated bronze and draped in flowing robes, her head crowned with a basket of fruit—a symbol of abundance and fertility. Behind her, a dramatic fan of radiating ormolu bronze plumes rises in a sunburst motif, lending vertical grandeur and emphasizing the refined neoclassical aesthetic. From the figure’s outstretched hands emerge three graceful candle arms, delicately reeded and formed as stylized cornucopia, richly adorned with finely chased foliate detailing. The scrolling side arms and central vertical branch each support lotus-form drip pans and circular nozzles, crowned with faux candle sleeves in flame-tip form. A polished gilt bronze sphere anchors the lower terminal, enhancing the sconce’s vertical elegance and symmetry. The backplate is further embellished with intricately cast grape clusters and feathered accents, reinforcing the classical themes of nature, abundance, and divine femininity. The juxtaposition of rich gilding against deep patination reflects the refined palette favored by premier bronziers of the Empire period.
