About the Item

An exceptional pair of Marc Lalique's celebrated "Séville" wall sconces in clear and frosted crystal with chrome finish. The Seville crystal element illuminates all interiors. Its satin finished crystal volutes create fascinating plays of light. Each sconce features the distinctive braided-form design comprising three curved crystal sections mounted within a polished chromed steel frame, topped and finished with frosted crystal caps and a pointed finial. Signed "LALIQUE FRANCE" on each crystal element. The Séville sconces were created by Marc Lalique in 1947 for the Marsan exhibition at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris—a pivotal moment that marked Lalique’s post-war renaissance. This exhibition, held at the historic Pavillon Marsan, announced the reopening of the Wingen-sur-Moder factory and the beginning of a new era for the house of Lalique under Marc’s leadership. Marc Lalique (1900-1977), son of the legendary René Lalique, inherited both his father’s artistic genius and technical mastery. After studying at the École des Arts Décoratifs de Paris, Marc joined his father in the family business in 1922. He was a highly skilled technician who made frequent visits to the Wingen-sur-Moder factory to oversee new production techniques. Upon René’s death in 1945, Marc transformed the company, transitioning from glass to crystal and introducing innovative designs that honored the Art Deco legacy while embracing post-war modernism. His technical bent and know-how led him to renovate and modernize the Wingen-sur-Moder factory, and Lalique rapidly became one of the finest crystal manufacturers not only in France but worldwide. The “Séville” design exemplifies Marc Lalique’s signature aesthetic: the contrast between sheer transparency and satin sheen that became Lalique’s hallmark at home and abroad. The sconce’s undulating crystal volutes create mesmerizing plays of light, with the satin-finished surfaces diffusing illumination while the polished edges capture and refract it. This majestic artwork reflects the passion, excellence, skill, and creativity of the best sculptors in lighting.
