About the Item

A rare and exquisitely preserved pair of Model 1943 wall lights by Max Ingrand for Fontana Arte, produced in the 1950s. These sculptural appliques display all the hallmarks of Ingrand’s mastery: purity of line, noble materials, and an interplay of light that turns glass into architecture. Each sconce is composed of thick, bevelled glass plates — their edges hand-polished to crystal clarity — paired with large frosted surfaces that diffuse light with exceptional softness. What makes this pair truly unique is a bespoke request made by their original private commissioner: one sconce was produced in a transparent hue, while the other features a rare “Nilo Blue” tone. Installed together, they create an elegant duality of colour and shadow, offering two different atmospheres within the same composition. This intentional asymmetry is enchanting, subtle, and unmistakably bespoke — the kind of detail collectors dream of finding. The metal structure combines lacquered steel with original brass clamps, all displaying a rich, authentic patina that speaks to seventy years of age and careful use. The brass elements, in particular, glow with a deep, warm oxidation that complements the cool clarity of the glass. Both pieces retain their original wiring. Rewiring is recommended for safety and can be carried out upon request. As expected for 1950s Fontana Arte glass, there are small age-related marks. One of the two sconces — the Nilo Blue version — presents a minor chip to the inner edge (clearly shown in the photos). It is discreet, absolutely stable, and does not compromise function or presentation. If anything, it testifies to the authenticity and untouched nature of the piece, adding charm rather than detracting from it. A sophisticated and highly atmospheric pair, perfect for collectors, architects, and interiors where historical Italian lighting is allowed to perform its quiet magic.
