About the Item
Pair of early 20th century floral wall sconces attributed to the Caldwell Manufacturing Company, American, circa 1910–1920. Executed in painted tole over brass or bronze, each sconce features two elegantly scrolling candle arms issuing from a shaped foliate backplate, richly ornamented with hand-formed roses, buds, and finely modeled leaves.
The floral elements are hand-painted in warm orange and ochre tones over a bronzed ground with a naturally aged patina. Blossom-form candle cups reinforce the botanical theme and add sculptural depth and visual interest. The composition reflects Beaux-Arts design principles of symmetry and refinement, combined with Belle Époque richness and subtle Art Nouveau influence evident in the naturalistic floral modeling.
The quality of craftsmanship, layered construction, and European-inspired ornament are consistent with Caldwell’s decorative lighting produced during the early 20th century, a period when the firm was known for adapting Continental design traditions for the American market.
Wired for electricity; accommodates two candle-style bulbs per sconce.
