About the Item

A pair of Finnish mid-century wall lamps designed by Paavo Tynell, model 2351, produced by Idman in the 1950s. Each lamp features a softly tapered white metal shade with a subtle cut-out detail at the lower edge, mounted on a compact wall base with a short brass arm. The white painted surfaces show light wear and small marks, consistent with age and use, while the brass elements have developed a natural patina. Model 2351 reflects Tynell’s post-war design language, where function and form are carefully balanced through restrained geometry and refined material contrasts. Produced during a period when Idman collaborated closely with leading Finnish designers, the lamp combines practical task lighting with a calm, modernist expression. The adjustable shade and focused light output make it a versatile design rooted firmly in Nordic modernism. Used as a pair, these wall lamps work well as bedside lights, reading lamps, or accent lighting in a living space or hallway. Their compact scale, graphic silhouette, and original details bring a clear mid-century presence while remaining easy to integrate into both contemporary and period interiors. • Material: Painted metal, brass • Model number: 2351 • Designer: Paavo Tynell • Manufacturer: Idman • Period: 1950s • Origin / Country: Finland • Condition: Good vintage condition with wear to the painted surfaces and patina to the brass, consistent with age and use • Set info: Pair NOTE ON THE DESIGNER – Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was a central figure in Finnish lighting design and one of the most influential Nordic designers of the 20th century. His work spans Art Deco through modernism, characterized by refined metalwork, thoughtful light control, and an enduring sense of atmosphere. Tynell’s designs for Idman in the post-war period are especially appreciated for their balance of function, clarity, and quiet elegance, and remain highly collectible today.
