About the Item

Elegant and understated wall sconces designed by Sergio Asti for Arteluce, model 145, produced in Italy in the 1960s. The design features a large hand-blown opaline glass globe that rests on a sculptural painted metal frame. The soft spherical diffuser produces a warm, even glow, emphasizing Asti’s refined sensitivity to light and proportion. Asti’s work for Arteluce is known for its purity of form, and this model exemplifies that philosophy: minimal, sculptural, and quietly luxurious. The elongated vertical support and curved arm give the piece a graceful architectural presence, while the opaline globe adds a luminous, ethereal quality. Sergio Asti (1926–2021) was an influential Italian industrial designer and architect, known for his refined, sculptural approach to everyday objects. A graduate of the Politecnico di Milano and one of ADI’s founding members, he collaborated with leading manufacturers such as Arteluce, Artemide, and Salviati. Asti’s work spans lighting, furniture, and glass, characterized by pure geometry, material sensitivity, and a focus on form as function. His designs are represented in major museum collections, including MoMA, and remain icons of Italian modernism. Arteluce was an influential Italian lighting company founded in 1939 by Gino Sarfatti. Known for its innovative, experimental approach, Arteluce helped define post-war Italian modernism. The company collaborated with leading designers including Franco Albini, Sergio Asti, Ico Parisi, and Vittoriano Viganò pushing the boundaries of form, materials, and technology. Arteluce’s work was celebrated internationally, receiving multiple Compasso d’Oro awards, and many designs are now held in major museum collections. The brand ultimately became part of Flos, preserving its legacy in contemporary design.
