About the Item
The Barovier family represents one of the oldest and most important artisan dynasties in European history. Active in Murano for more than seven centuries, the family has produced generations of master glassmakers who played a decisive role in the evolution of artistic glass, transforming a craft into a cultural language.
Among the leading figures of the twentieth century stands Ercole Barovier, one of the greatest Murano glass masters of his time, renowned for his ability to combine technical tradition with formal innovation. He is credited with the development of one of the most distinctive and complex Murano techniques: rostrato glass, characterized by sculptural protrusions resembling natural forms—pinecones or mineral growths—created through highly skilled manual intervention. These “rostre” are shaped while the glass is hot and then refined using traditional tools, such as glassmaker’s shears, making each piece inherently unique.
This specific technique was officially presented by Ercole Barovier in 1938, as documented in the catalogue of the Italian exhibition held that year in the presence of His Majesty King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy. It represents not only a technical achievement, but a historically recognized milestone in the history of Murano glass.
The pair of wall sconces presented here belongs precisely to this cultural and artistic context: Murano rostrato glass, an expression of a unique and unrepeatable period in which Italian craftsmanship was closely connected to major official exhibitions and to an educated, discerning patronage.
The provenance of these pieces is equally significant. Giancarlo Planta, the current owner, is the penultimate descendant of the Planta family, a historic dynasty originating from the Grisons region of Switzerland. His great-great-grandfather, Baron von Planta, was a collector of important Murano glass works, and a substantial part of that collection has been passed down through inheritance to the present day.
This pair of wall sconces therefore comes from a historic private collection, now released onto the market as part of a conscious decision to preserve, value, and transmit these works to new custodians. These are rare objects from a limited production, having survived more than eighty years of history, and should be regarded not merely as decorative lighting, but as true collectible works of art.
Acquiring historic Murano glass means investing in objects that are gradually disappearing: no longer reproducible, not industrial, and carrying with them a technical and cultural memory already selected by time itself. In this sense, these wall sconces are genuine livable jewels—objects that reveal their full beauty every time they are lit, uniting function and contemplation in a single gesture.
