About the Item

This exquisite and rare wall sconce is a true collector's item from the Mid-Century period. Created by the renowned French design duo Adrien Audoux and Frida Minnet in the 1950s, this sconce perfectly embodies their unique aesthetic, blending rustic charm with sophisticated design through the use of natural materials. The lamp's structure is entirely crafted from braided hemp rope, forming a stylized anchor motif. The rope work is of exceptional quality, showcasing the artisanal technique and attention to detail that are hallmarks of Audoux-Minnet's work. The main, thick, and sturdy rope is skillfully intertwined, creating a design that is both organic and sculptural. The sconce features two lights, each topped with its original hemp rope lampshade. The texture and color of the shades perfectly complement the rest of the structure. These shades diffuse a soft and warm light, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. This piece is in excellent condition, retaining its original patina which attests to its history and authenticity. It is the epitome of biomorphic design and the "rope style," highly sought after by collectors and vintage design enthusiasts. Adrien Audoux, originally from Franche-Comté, and Frida Minnet, who was Swiss-born, were a married couple and design partners. They founded their design studio in Cannes in 1929, likely during their honeymoon. In 1942, they relocated to Golfe-Juan (French Riviera), where they developed their distinctive style. Their work was grounded in the use of natural and accessible materials like: Hemp rope Rattan Bamboo Wood They embraced a rustic modernism, creating pieces that were both functional and warm, blending modern design principles with handcrafted aesthetics. Their approach was informed by a post-war context, emphasizing simplicity, honesty in materials, and affordability. Chairs, armchairs, tables, and light fixtures made with rope and wood. Organic lines and raw, tactile textures. A cozy, artisanal look that contrasts with the more industrial modernist trends of the time. They became especially known for their rope furniture, which gained popularity in the 1950s and is now emblematic of their style. Their pieces were often commissioned by or sold to the affluent clientele of the French Riviera.
