About the Item

This rare pair of wall lamps represents a masterpiece of 20th-century Venetian craftsmanship, designed by renowned designer Ercole Barovier and crafted by the historic Barovier Toso glassworks on the island of Murano. Likely produced in the 1940s or 1950s, these works exemplify the modernist innovation of Barovier, who, as artistic director of the firm (from 1926 to 1972), revolutionized the Murano glassmaking tradition, blending classical elegance with sculptural forms and cutting-edge techniques. Their rarity stems not only from their limited artisanal production—each piece is mouth-blown by master glassmakers—but also from their historical context: Barovier Toso, founded in 1295 and one of the oldest glassmaking families in the world, created over 25,000 designs under Ercole's guidance, yet only a few models combine lighting functionality and artistic value in such an iconic way. The lamps are crafted from Venetian rock crystal (known as "Murano glass"), a pure, transparent, lead-free material that allows for extraordinary light refraction. The glasswork, done without molds, creates unique three-dimensional textures, with ripples and spirals that capture and diffuse light hypnotically, producing shimmering effects and dancing shadows. These lamps are not simple illuminators, but true luminous sculptures that transform spaces: the transparent glass, with its wavy veins, reflects and amplifies ambient light, generating iridescent reflections that range from milky white to golden at sunset. When turned on, the effect is magical—the internal bulb illuminates the ripples like crystal veins, projecting abstract patterns onto nearby walls, perfect for a minimalist or Art Deco design. Their chromatic purity (colorless glass with subtle silvery reflections) makes them versatile, but their value lies in their ability to elevate furnishings to works of art, evoking Barovier's Venetian heritage: from the tradition of royal chandeliers to the modernist innovations exhibited at the Venice Biennale in the 1930s.
