About the Item

Extremely rare set of three Cubosfera wall lights designed by Alessandro Mendini for Fidenza Vetraria in the 1960s — iconic sculptural objects that sit at the intersection of art, glass experimentation and Italian radical design. Each sconce is composed of two perfectly moulded glass halves, blown using a pneumatic press technique — an exceptionally complex and advanced process for its time. The result is a transparent cubic volume enclosing a spherical lens, a pure geometric interplay that produces remarkable optical effects: reflections, distortions, and a glowing depth when illuminated. These pieces are the first and most valuable version, entirely transparent. The later satin-glass edition, introduced in the 1970s upon request from clients who preferred to conceal the bulbs, softened the visual impact — but, in our view, diminished the extraordinary purity of Mendini’s original concept. This set is preserved in beautiful original condition. The glass elements are in exceptionally fine shape — no chips, no cracks, no defects whatsoever, which is extraordinarily rare for this model. The brass and metal structure shows a rich, honest patina and visible oxidation, consistent with age and adding depth and authenticity to the sconces. The bulb holders and internal parts also display oxidation; rewiring is recommended and can be arranged upon request. When lit, the Cubosfera projects a captivating, prismatic atmosphere: the spherical core catches the light and folds it back into the cube, creating a soft, luminous architecture on the wall. The transparency of this early version enhances the floating effect of the central glass sphere, highlighting precisely what made this design so innovative and technically daring. A rare opportunity to acquire three matching examples of one of the most forward-thinking glass experiments of the Italian 1960s — a set that speaks directly to collectors of postwar Italian design, radical design, and early conceptual works by Alessandro Mendini.
