About the Item
Impressive and elegant Italian wall sconce with five lights, featuring faux candles and wooden bobeches. The entire structure, solid and well-proportioned, is crafted from wrought iron with various hand-forged details. The design faithfully follows the Rococo style, characterized by soft, sinuous lines enriched with hand-shaped foliate decorations and finely chiseled iron sheet embellishments. The gilding was executed using the traditional mission gilding technique, an ancient process that allows gold leaf to be applied to metal surfaces. A highly adhesive glue—known as mission—is first brushed onto the surface, then covered with gold leaf. Each artisan guarded his own secret formula, designed to preserve the brilliance of the gold for generations. One can think, for instance, of the magnificent gates of the Gardens of Versailles at the court of Louis XIV, gilded using the same technique. The carefully arranged faux candles, fitted with light sockets, ensure a uniform, comfortable, and pleasant diffusion of light. Entirely handcrafted in Florence between 1935 and 1940 by an unknown yet remarkable master artisan, this piece exemplifies the refined balance between craftsmanship and elegance. True elegance, after all, is never ostentatious—it lies in the simplicity of beauty and the harmony of proportions. Florence and its artisan tradition date back to the Middle Ages. Thanks to the ancient Guilds and the enlightened Medici rulers, the city and its skilled craftsmen became the heart of European artistic culture. The sconce is in good overall condition, though the electrical system should be replaced—a simple operation, as the wiring runs externally along the back of the piece.
