About the Item

An exquisite set of eight French Empire style gilt bronze figural neoclassical wall sconces. Each sconce is structured with a central backplate featuring a prominent male mask, modeled with a full beard and framed by a radiating headdress. The lower section of the backplate extends into a palmette-form design with elongated, flaring leaves. From the sides emerge two curved candle arms, cast with ridged detailing resembling stylized feathers, and terminating in circular drip pans. The drip pans are decorated with masks in relief, surrounded by acanthus ornamentation. Each candle arm supports a cylindrical candle holder, designed for electrification while retaining the appearance of traditional wax candles. The surfaces of the sconces are finished in a rich gilt, accentuating the sculptural details of the masks, palmette base, and feathered arms. These sconces were produced in France in the Empire style, which drew upon classical motifs and emphasized symmetry, strong figural forms, and gilt bronze ornamentation. The use of masks, acanthus, and palmette elements is characteristic of the neoclassical vocabulary employed in decorative works of the early 19th century. Sets of sconces in this style were often commissioned for grand interiors, where they were installed in multiples to create rhythm and balance within architectural schemes.
