About the Item

During the 1950s and 1960s, Maria Lindeman became one of the voices in constructing Finnish modernism. This model “K8-24'' shows off the Finnish designer’s most characteristic design elements, including a sculptural, modern look based on the visual interaction of materials and angles. Characterised by clean lines, and a seamless blend of materials, this model features a sleek brass wall-mount, which was a popular choice of material in the 1950s. The choice of brass adds an element of elegance and sophistication, giving the lamps a refined and polished look. The opal glass shades, another signature material of the era, provides a practical function by diffusing light evenly, while simultaneously fulfilling an aesthetic role thanks to its elongated shape. When lit, these lamps create an exceptionally atmospheric light, giving the brass a vivid colour. The modernistic look of this set is further achieved by the simple yet smart design of the silhouette, with the brass acting as delicate details of the frame rather than overpowering the streamlined cylindrical shade. This look is almost industrial, yet has the edge of Finnish mid-century design. The prowess of the designer becomes evident as these wall lamps stand as statement pieces despite their minimalism. Maria Lindeman was very successful in mixing the traditional and modern elements while staying true to the guiding principles of Finnish modernism. Wall lamps are not only functional sources of light, but also anchoring pieces in interior design. This set can be used to create ambiance, illuminate key features of a room, or complement a space’s design aesthetic. With their timeless materials and subtle detailing, these lamps are an enduring example of mid-century Finnish design, evoking a sense of classic beauty that still resonates today. These lamps were manufactured by the famous Finnish manufactory Idman Oy, one of the most innovative Nordic lighting design companies of the mid-century era. Established in 1936 in Turku, Finland, Idman was renowned for its exceptional metalwork and craftsmanship, and this set of wall lamps is a true testament to that reputation.
