About the Item

This refined pair of caged lantern sconces features leaf-shaped backplates adorned with elegant palmette hooks. The heat caps are encircled by a decorative frieze of flame-like palmettes, adding a dynamic sense of movement to the design. Each yellow mottled glass shade is accented with a circular turtleback tile at its base, offering a richly textured contrast. The interplay of organic motifs and jewel-like glass reflects the influence of both nature and craftsmanship. Together, these elements create a harmonious balance of form and ornamentation. Item #: L-21957 Artist: Tiffany Studios New York Country: United States Circa: 1900 Dimensions: 16.5" height, 8.25" width, 11.5" deep. Materials: Bronze, Favrile Glass Provenance: John W. Graham residence, Maerex-on-the-Hill, Springfield, PA Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: In the 19th century, wall-mounted gas lanterns played a crucial role in transforming urban and domestic lighting. Installed along streets, building façades, and entrances, they provided a steady, reliable source of illumination that extended activity and social life well into the evening. Their warm, flickering light not only enhanced safety by reducing accidents and crime but also lent an inviting atmosphere to public thoroughfares and private homes alike. Over time, these lanterns came to symbolize modern progress and urban sophistication, marking a significant step in the evolution from candlelight to electric illumination.

Pair of Tiffany Studios New York "Globe" Glass and Bronze Chandeliers
By Tiffany Studios, Louis Comfort Tiffany
Located in New York, NY
This enchanting pair of Tiffany Studios New York "hanging globe" chandeliers are composed of two reticulated glass shades. Tiffany’s idea of blowing glass through openwork bronze had evolved in the 1890s with a series of Byzantine revival fuel lamps. The technique was popularized by 19th-century Muranese Glassmakers Salvati as a derivation of the Ancient Roman cage cup (vasa diatreta). In the 4th century, Roman glassmakers encased blown glass vessels in a delicate cage of glass. In Tiffany’s version, glass is blown through an ogival pattern cage. Originating in 11th-century Byzantine textiles, the ogival pattern became established in Italy, Ottoman Turkey, North Africa, and as far west as the Balkans.
