Louis XVI Lighting

LOUIS XVI STYLE

Reflecting the final era of royal opulence before the upheaval of the French Revolution, antique Louis XVI furniture features more angular shapes than the Rococo curves of the Louis XV style, harkening back to the imposing grandeur of Louis XIV.

Dating between 1750 and 1800, an era that overlapped with the last king of France whose reign was cut short by the guillotine, Louis XVI furniture, known as the goût grec, is emblematic of the neoclassical revision that French furniture underwent during the second half of the 18th century.

Authentic Louis XVI furniture characteristics include clean lines and carved details such as scrolls and acanthus flourishes that were inspired by ancient Greece and Rome. This was informed by a burgeoning interest in antiquity in the 18th century, owing to new archaeological excavations at sites including Pompeii and Herculaneum. It largely eclipsed the more East Asian–influenced ornamentation of Louis XV for something more geometric and symmetrical.

The Louis XVI style was defined by what was being created for the palatial rooms at Versailles and Fontainebleau, particularly for the queen, with cabinetmaker Jean-Henri Riesener being a favorite of Marie-Antoinette’s for his luxurious pieces accented with gilded bronze and marquetry. Furniture maker Jean-Baptiste-Claude Sené was also a major designer of the period, with his pieces for the royal residences adorned with giltwood and neoclassical touches like tapered columns for chair legs and laurel leaf carvings. Cabinetmaker Adam Weisweiler occasionally incorporated into his furniture porcelain panels produced by Sèvres, a popular manufacturer of European ceramics that served the crown with serveware, vases and other decorative objects.

18th Century Style Pair of Wall lamp in Bronze 18K Gold
By Lacarrière, Delatour and Co., OMBRES ET FACETTES
Located in Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine, IDF
This beautiful pair of sconces is a re-edition of a model of the famous Parisian bronze maker Delatour Lacarrière. Lacarrière creates in 1825 a factory at 3 bis, rue Sainte- Elisabeth (Paris, France). Simple craftsman, he specializes and excels in the application of bronze in lighting devices. In 1834, he received an honorable mention, in 1839, a bronze medal and in 1844, a silver medal for a large triangular candelabra, prefiguring the one presented at the Universal Exhibition in London in 1862. He also participated in the design of the chandelier for the Queen's Theatre in London. From 1851 to 1870, he changed his company name several times. Lacarrière, Delatour et Cie (active in 1870) cast and chiseled most of the lamp posts, candelabras and chandeliers of the Paris Opera, including the one in the auditorium, designed by Charles Garnier...

Antique French Louis XVI Style Bronze, Tole, Rock Crystal Porcelain Chandelier
Located in New York, NY
A superb antique French Louis XVI style bronze, tole, rock crystal, and porcelain chandelier. The chandelier is arranged with six scrolling candle arms surrounding a central basket-form section. Each arm is fitted with a gilt bronze drip pan and candle socket, supporting faux candle lights. The structure is further enriched with foliate tole branches and a series of rock crystal pendants, varying in size from small drops to elongated pear-shaped prisms. The central gilt basket is designed with a lattice surface and issues tole leaves with porcelain flowerheads interspersed among the foliage. Additional rock crystal prisms hang from the lower ring, arms, and upper finial, with porcelain flowers mounted between the branches. The chandelier’s materials combine gilt bronze, tole, rock crystal, and porcelain, reflecting the French tradition of mixed-media decorative lighting. The bronze sections, including drip pans and central supports, are detailed with chased patterns, while the tole foliage is painted in dark tones to contrast with the porcelain blossoms. The porcelain flowers are molded in white, forming miniature roses and blossoms placed throughout the branches. Rock crystal drops are cut in teardrop and faceted pendeloque forms, suspended from gilt rings, and mounted at key points along the arms and finial. This chandelier follows the Louis XVI style, developed in France during the late 19th century, which emphasized symmetry, neoclassical motifs, and the integration of naturalistic ornament. Chandeliers of this type were popular among French decorative art manufacturers of the 19th century, often pairing porcelain flowers with rock crystal pendants for a refined decorative effect. The combination of basket-form elements, porcelain floral...

Pair of Jardinieres-Candelabras by Boin-Taburet, France, Circa 1880
Located in PARIS, FR
Signed Boin-Taburet à Paris and numbered 34369 and 34370 Lovely pair of Louis XVI style planters with three light arms. Each jardiniere, with their liners in form of a basket based on a three leafy feet and a lobed base. The inner liners are removable. The two French goldsmiths George Boin and his son-in-law Emile Taburet created around 1875 in Paris the company Boin-Taburet. They made many silver pieces inspired by the beautiful services of the eighteenth century. At the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1878, Georges Boin presented a “service de toilette” inspired by the work of François-Thomas Germain (1726-1791), and then at the Universal Exhibition of 1889, several epergnes, including one of them executed after drawings by the famous artist Juste-Aurèle Meissonier (1695-1750), as well as tea sets of Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI styles. Marvelous Pair of 19th C. French Ormolu Four Arm Candelabras, Signed P. Canaux
Located in New York, NY
A Marvelous Pair of 19th century French Ormolu Four-Arm Candelabras, Signed Paul Canaux. Paul Canaux was an incredible jeweler and silversmith, and would produce his pieces in 30 rue des Francs-Bourgeois in Paris. He originally worked for the great silversmith and plater Joseph Mégemond. Following his career with Mégemond on August 9th, 1888 he placed his own hallmark. He was a made an array of products, which included silverware, cutlery, tea sets, centerpieces, candelabras as well as many other silver and gilt-bronze objects of the highest quality. His maker’s hallmark was struck in 1892 and they changed the name to "Paul Canaux et Cie". In the 5 Generations of our business, these are some of the greatest candelabras we have ever had the pleasure of adding to our collection. This is truly an exceptional pair of candelabras. They were produced by P. Canaux, a master silversmith who made the most wonderful and outstanding pieces of silver and ormolu. These ormolu candelabras are no exception with a variety of hand-chased and hand-chiseled motifs which elevate these pieces to a different level of quality and craftsmanship. The top most finial of each candelabra is absolutely marvelous with a phoenix emerging from a cauldron of flames. Flanked on either end of each candelabra are two satyrs each holding up a candelabra arm with superior quality, each wrinkle in their faces and hair on their heads is visible. Between the candelabras is a basket of ormolu cast fruits, leaves, and vines. They are truly breathtaking and in high-relief against the main body of the candelabras. The other two candelabra arms are held up by Nereus, the Greek GD of the sea. He is known for his half-man, half-dolphin appearance with a majestic and highly detailed pair of angelic wings...

Rock Crystal Chaine Chandelier of 12 Lights in Bronze with Silver Finish
Located in Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine, IDF
This chandelier is an original variation of the chain models that could be found in the 18th century, such as the Louis XVI period torchiere chandelier in the Château de Versailles. On a central openwork bowl surmounted by a metal dagger, twelve arms of light are spread out. Each of these supports a cup in the centre of which a flower bud wick is in full bloom. Four arms extending from the central dagger connect the central cup to a small tray decorated with rosettes and pendants. These same pendants are repeated under the bowl and on the light arms. This composition creates two superimposed parts, the first in bronze, very light because of the spacing of the arms, and the second in rock crystal, more dense, like a forest. We have this one in stock however we can reproduce it in an other finish or in an other size. We manufacture most of our orders bespoke : from models of our collection that we can adapt to required dimensions, from antiques models which will allow often to get a set or more of identical models, or we can create from scratch the model of our clients. We work from pictures, drawings, designer’s sketches...
