About the Item

These exceptional matched Sèvres Style French porcelain vasiform pedestal table lamps were hand-painted by Marie Demonceaux (1850-1899). The vessels' flattened ovoid bodies are painted in the round and feature highly detailed and colorful landscapes populated with recumbent ladies accompanied by putti. The women are engaged in the arts, with one depicted in the midst of painting a cherub's portrait. The female artist wears lilac and yellow robes and has a palette bearing paintbrushes resting by her bare feet. An open folio is propped up against the rise of a gentle slope located behind her back. The young woman depicted on the second lamp is dressed in pink and plays the tambourine while a lyre and drums rest on the ground beside her. Fruits and flowers are mounded beneath her left arm. One of the lamps depicts a winged putto surrounded by sculptor's tools. He sits upon a thick block of stone while gesturing at plans drawn on a paper scroll. The putto's blue garment falls in gentle folds behind his back, and the end of the fabric drapes over the edge of his hewn stone seat. The putto on the other lamp wears a laurel crown on his head and is seated on the ground with his bare feet resting on a flat rock. An overturned basket of flowers lies nearby on the ground to his left. He wears loosely draped yellow robes and grasps a flaming torch adorned with a blue ribbon. The vessels' necks bear a continuous moulded interlinked pattern while the undersides are encircled with a moulded gadroon pattern, both of which are ornamented in gilt. The lamps have wide metal collars beneath the moulded gadroon detail that transition to porcelain stems terminating in domed pedestal feet. The domed feet also bear gilt-accented moulded decoration and are encircled with a row of metal beading. The porcelain feet are securely mounted on footed cast bronze plinths, each having a serpentine edge. The lamps come with graceful ribbed fabric shades bearing decorative borders at the bottom. The pair is in excellent condition and displays beautifully. One of the lamps carries the artist's signature, "M. Demonceaux" - the other lamp is not signed and is attributed to Demonceaux. As antiques, the pieces show signs of age including wear/losses to the gilt, discoloration to the metal, and scuffs to the porcelain. In addition, some of the feet retain green felt protective pads applied by a former owner. These outstanding antique French porcelain table lamps are expertly decorated and exhibit timeless appeal. An elegant pair offering both charm and function.
