About the Item

A rare and elegant pair of antique French Samson porcelain polychromed porcelain and bronze lamps. Each lamp features a tall baluster-shaped porcelain body that rises to a gilt bronze burner with a crown-form gallery. The porcelain is decorated with painted floral sprays in shades of pink, purple, green, and yellow, complemented by molded scrollwork in relief. The central section displays a heraldic coat of arms with a lion and a unicorn supporting a crowned shield, framed by scrolling acanthus flourishes. The bases are circular and mounted with gilt bronze rims, providing stability and a finished border. The decoration is carried throughout the structure with small floral reserves interspersed across the surface, while embossed detailing enhances the porcelain’s texture. The reverse sides are painted with polychrome floral bouquets, balancing the heraldic designs with natural motifs. The tall, tapering upper sections are further enriched with scattered floral sprays, uniting the decoration across the form from base to crown. These lamps were produced by Samson of Paris, founded by Edmé Samson in the 19th century. The workshop became known for creating revivalist porcelain inspired by earlier European and Asian models. Samson’s production often included heraldic decoration and richly polychromed floral painting, features present in these examples. The addition of gilt bronze fittings, such as the burners and bases, was consistent with French decorative practice of the 19th century and aligns these lamps with the broader tradition of ormolu-mounted porcelain.
