About the Item
Striking large antique lamp features urn shaped porcelain body with two ornate decorative twin handles, hand-painted in Victorian style with large English roses and country landscape. Soft creamy yellow colors of the roses are juxtaposed with deep dark green color of the leaves and rich, complex olive-green background color. Moody, dark shades of green are lightened up with the soft cream, grey, and gold colors of geometrical decor on the base, top, and handles; placement of the gold accentuates fine textured detailing on the porcelain base. Brass fixtures bring out and emphasize the gold accents on the lamp. The lamp body is prominently signed by the artist near the central motif.
Originally the lamp was found with typical Victorian style multi-tiered cast iron base that sustained heavy damage; the base was signed with "Knickerbocker Industries Bklyn N.Y.". Unfortunately, we were unable to save the original base and had to replace it with a sturdier, wider round brass base that is more suited to contemporary living, but the original base allowed us to identify and date the lamp; it was made in Brooklyn, NY by City Knickerbocker in early 20th century.
City Knickerbocker was founded in 1906 by Russian immigrant Adolph Liroff, who began his career by converting gasoliers and sconces to electric lamps and fabricating custom lighting in Brooklyn, NY. He was asked to rent some of his custom light fixtures to the Metropolitan Opera Company, as well as to the Shuberts and other Broadway production companies. By 1912-13, the business was largely rentals of custom light fixtures. In the 1950s, Adolph’s son Seymour took over the business and moved it to larger quarters in the heart of Manhattan’s Theatre District. City Knickerbocker began supplying rentals to The Milton Berle Show, Ed Sullivan, Dinah Shore, Perry Como, Sid Caesar, and Jackie Gleason, among others. At the same time, theatrical lighting remained an important part of the business, and City Knickerbocker helped create the ambience and props for productions such as West Side Story, My Fair Lady, Hello Dolly, and The Diary of Anne Frank. They created props for two Oscar-winners, The Godfather and The Hustler, as well as beautiful green-glass bankers' lamps for the hit film Network. Later City Knickerbocker created props for Malcolm X, The Verdict, The Age of Innocence, Sabrina, Rounders, Meet Joe Black, and A Beautiful Mind, as well as every Woody Allen film, and nighttime dramas and comedies including The Soprano's, Law and Order, Sex and The City, and Third Watch. City Knickerbocker has done the lighting for every Saturday Night Live show since the October 11, 1975.
City Knickerbocker remained in family hands for four generations; the firm is still operating in Manhattan at the new, bigger location, with most of their historic lamps still remaining in the inventory, available for renting; very few of their lamps were ever sold. Finding such a rare table lamp with unique history, related to American movies industry and Broadway theater production was an exciting, rare event; we chose to preserve the signed remains on the original lamp base for the future owner.
The lamp is in fully operational, very good restored antique or vintage condition, newly wired with a new socket and brass fixtures. Sculptural, decorative lamp with large-scale form, prominent textures, and statement piece presence will make a perfect addition to a wide range of interiors, from Traditional to Victorian, Arts and Crafts, Transitional, Hollywood Regency, Glam, Collected, or Contemporary.
