About the Item

Art Deco Wrought Iron Lamp – Floral Tulip Shade Signed Degué, France, circa 1930 Superb wrought iron lamp from the Art Deco period, made in France around 1930. Elegant, hand-crafted floral frame adorned with stylized ginkgo leaves – an iconic motif of Art Deco aesthetics. The tulip-shaped shade is made of molded pressed glass with a floral design, signed Degué, a renowned master glassmaker known for his refined creations of the 1920s and 1930s. Fully restored to professional standards: • Wrought iron stripped, treated against corrosion, and hand-patinated • Brand-new wiring compliant with current safety standards Dimensions: Height: 39 cm Diameter: 14 cm A rare and decorative piece, combining the finesse of metalwork with the poetic quality of vintage glass. Perfect for a characterful interior or a discerning collection. History: David Guéron and the Verrerie d’Art Degué A Glassmaking Entrepreneur at the Heart of Art Deco: David Guéron (1892–1950), a glass artist of Turkish origin and Spanish nationality, was a distinctive figure in the French Art Deco movement. He is best known as the founder of Verrerie d’Art Degué, active in Paris from 1926 to 1939. From Compiègne Beginnings to Parisian Expansion: In the 1920s, Guéron established the Cristalleries de Compiègne, before turning to luxury artistic glassware. In 1926, he opened his glassworks on Boulevard Malesherbes in Paris under the name Verrerie d’Art Degué. There, he created mainly vases, bowls, sconces, and chandeliers in the Art Deco style, characterized by geometric forms, clean lines, and a rich color palette. A Strong – Sometimes Too Strong – Aesthetic Inspiration: Degué's creations were heavily influenced by renowned glassmakers from Lorraine, such as Daum, the Muller brothers, and especially Charles Schneider. This stylistic proximity led to accusations of plagiarism and even legal disputes. Nevertheless, Verrerie Degué enjoyed commercial success, meeting the growing demand for modern decorative objects during the interwar years. Decline and Closure: In August 1936, David Guéron was imprisoned in Compiègne for attempting to sell assets belonging to a bankrupt company – presumably linked to his earlier ventures in crystal manufacturing. This legal trouble hastened the glassworks’ decline. In 1939, as World War II broke out, production ceased permanently. Guéron left France for the United States, marking the end of his glassmaking career. A Recognized Art Deco Legacy: Today, pieces signed Degué are sought after by collectors and lovers of Art Nouveau and Art Deco. Their heritage value lies in both their artistic quality and their embodiment of a highly creative era of intense competition among French glassmakers.
