About the Item

The gilt bronze base of this French Art Nouveau boudoir lamp, by Edouard Colonna, has a charming, voluptuous vegetal motif that mimics the appearance of a careful arrangement of turning leaves. The fringed pale gold original silk shade of the lamp is topped by a twisted vine finial that spreads in an arch over the top of the piece. Item #: EL-17678 Artist: Edouard Colonna Country: France Circa: 1903 Dimensions: 17.5" height, 11" diameter Materials: Gilt bronze, Silk Signed: Impressed "Colonna" to base Provenance: Collection of James and Rose Ryan Literature: Similar lamp pictured in Art Nouveau: The French Aesthetic, by Victor Arwas, London: Andreas Papadakis, 2002, p. 281 Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: If one looks closely, it is easy to imagine the entirety of the composition, excluding the shade, being one single, living organism, with the leaf like base giving way to the stem like, ribbed neck, before becoming two sinuous vines that wrap around the entire piece.
