An uncommon and quietly expressive example of Bernard Rooke’s studio pottery, this handcrafted ceramic table lamp dates to the 1960s and reflects a more organic, almost lyrical direction within his body of work — a compelling contrast to the brutalist ceramics for which he is best known.
Created in Rooke’s UK workshop, the piece demonstrates his departure into a softer, sculptural idiom. The base is adorned with two prominent, hand-modelled red leaves — one on each face — enclosed by deeply ridged, ochre-toned ceramic blades suggestive of grass. A subdued lavender glaze encircles the neck, introducing tonal complexity and chromatic contrast. The palette — clay-rich reds, warm ochres, and mineral lavenders — evokes the British landscape, while maintaining the tactile intensity that defines mid-century British studio pottery.
Stamped with Rooke’s ‘BR’ monogram to the underside, the lamp measures 28 cm high with a diameter of 16 cm. It is offered in very good vintage condition, retaining the integrity of its original ceramic structure.
A lesser-seen style within Bernard Rooke’s vintage lighting designs, this piece is especially suited for collectors of post-war British ceramics, mid-century modern lighting, or those drawn to more expressive examples of 1960s studio pottery.
