About the Item

Rare and important French Art Deco table lamp by Charles Schneider, produced in Epinay-sur-Seine, Paris, circa 1918–1920. This striking lamp features a sculptural blown molded glass shade resting on a beautifully crafted wrought-iron base of exceptional quality. The shade is made using double-layer blown glass with colored powders trapped between the layers, a technically demanding process characteristic of Schneider’s most innovative early production. The contrast between the luminous glass and the powerful hand-forged iron base exemplifies the transition from Art Nouveau to early Art Deco, making this lamp both decorative and historically significant. The glass shade is signed “Schneider” (see photo), confirming its authenticity. Designer: Charles Schneider Origin: Epinay-sur-Seine, Paris, France Period: 1918–1920 Materials: Blown molded glass, wrought iron Style: Art Deco, Early Modern Measurements Height: 15.75 in (40 cm) Diameter: 7.4 in (18.8 cm) Condition Very good vintage condition Minor age-related wear consistent with early 20th-century production Additional Information Delivered professionally wired for your country (US, UK, EU, Australia, etc.) LED compatible Charles Schneider was born on February 23, 1881, in Château-Thierry, near Paris. He moved at an early age to Nancy, then the artistic center of France and a major hub of the Art Nouveau movement. He began working at Daum in 1898, where he trained in engraving and decoration while also studying drawing and modeling under Henri Bergé and attending the École des Beaux-Arts in Nancy. In 1904, he continued his studies at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris, focusing on painting and medal engraving. In 1913, Charles and his brother Ernest Schneider founded their own glassworks in Epinay-sur-Seine, initially known as Schneider Frères Wolf. Production was interrupted by World War I but resumed in 1917 under the name Société Anonyme des Verreries Schneider. Between 1918 and the early 1920s, Schneider produced some of his most important works, including satin-finished cameo glass, wheel-carved pieces, and innovative designs incorporating intercalary motifs, applied decoration, and colored powders. During this period, he also mastered the technique of “marqueterie de verre”, learned from artists formerly working at Gallé. Schneider later introduced the famous trade names “Le Verre Français” and “Charder”, making high-quality art glass more accessible while continuing to produce signed “Schneider” pieces for specialized art dealers. His work was widely exported to the United States and is considered among the finest French Art Deco glass. After the decline of the original factory following the 1929 crash and its liquidation in 1937, Schneider founded a new glassworks in 1950, producing free-blown crystal objects signed “Schneider France.” Charles Schneider died in 1952. Today, his lamps and glass objects are highly sought after for their technical mastery, bold forms, and luminous color effects.
