A Charming Meiji Period Japanese Imari Porcelain Table Lamp A delightful and finely proportioned Japanese Imari porcelain table lamp, dating from the late Meiji period (circa 1890). Originally a small-scale oil lamp, this piece exemplifies the "Kinrande" style, characterised by its vibrant underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze iron-red, and intricate gold leaf detailing. The baluster body is decorated with traditional lobed panels containing floral sprays of prunus and chrysanthemum, set against a dense background of scrolling vines and geometric diaper patterns. The lamp is mounted on a delicate yet sturdy circular brass base, which elevates the porcelain without overwhelming its modest scale. The transition from the ceramic neck to the electrical fitting is seamless, retaining the elegant verticality of its original Victorian-era silhouette. Its compact size makes it an ideal choice for a bedside table, an escritoire, or a cozy library nook. Small-scale Imari wares like this were highly prized in the late 19th century as part of the 'Aesthetic Movement' in Britain. Unlike the massive vases intended for grand hallways, these smaller lamps were designed for the more private, intimate spaces of a Victorian home. The 'Imari' palette of red, blue, and gold has remained a staple of British interior design for over a century, famed for its ability to complement both warm wood tones and rich fabrics. Dealer’s Comments "There is something incredibly jewel-like about Imari when it is on this smaller scale. Often, the larger pieces can feel a bit imposing, but this lamp has a wonderful intimacy to it. The hand-painting is remarkably precise—if you look closely at the red enamels, you can see the slight texture of the brushwork. It’s a perfect example of how 19th-century craftsmanship can be adapted for modern living without losing its soul. It provides a lovely 'pop' of colour against mahogany or oak furniture." Condition Report The porcelain is in excellent antique condition, showing no chips, cracks, or restorations. Professionally restored and rewired to modern UK standards using high-quality British-made components. It features a new brass B22 bayonet bulb holder and a gold-braided silk three-core flex that perfectly matches the gilding of the porcelain.
