About the Item

Attributed Claire Falkenstein table lamp for Salviati, featuring a hand formed spun glass dome over a mouth blown crystal glass cylinder base. Italy, circa 1970s. This rare table lamp is attributed to the American sculptor Claire Falkenstein for Salviati, one of the most important Venetian glass workshops of the twentieth century. Falkenstein is internationally known for her experimental open-form sculptures and her collaborations with Salviati during the 1960s and 1970s, in which she explored glass as an expressive material rather than a decorative one. The lamp features a sculptural spun glass dome, created by drawing molten glass into fine threads and fusing them into an intricate open structure. This demanding technique results in a luminous, highly sculptural form that echoes the dynamic linear constructions found in Falkenstein’s metal and glass works. When illuminated, the shade becomes a floating mass of crystalline light, turning the lamp into a functional piece of sculpture. The cylindrical base is mouth blown from pure crystal glass, its clarity and simplicity providing a quiet architectural contrast to the expressive energy of the shade. This combination of restraint and experimentation is characteristic of the most innovative Venetian studio glass produced in Murano during the late twentieth century. A closely related example was included in the Design Collection of Dimitri Levas and was sold at Wright20, one of the leading auction houses for postwar design. The form is documented in the exhibition catalogues “Claire Falkenstein: Structure and Flow Works from 1950–1980” (Louis Stern Fine Arts) and “Claire Falkenstein: Change Choice,” confirming the significance of this model within Falkenstein’s glass oeuvre. Lamps of this type are highly sought after by collectors of postwar sculpture, Murano studio glass and American modernism. This example offers exceptional sculptural presence and strong luminosity. Rewired for modern use and ready to place. This lamp belongs to the documented group of experimental Venetian studio glass from the 1960s and 1970s associated with Claire Falkenstein’s collaboration with the Salviati workshops. A closely related example was part of the Design Collection of Dimitri Levas and appeared in a Wright20 auction dedicated to important postwar design. The form is illustrated in major Falkenstein catalogues, establishing its relevance within the artist’s glass production. Works from this corpus have been exhibited in institutions such as LACMA, SFMOMA, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Hirshhorn Museum, reflecting the artist’s central place in postwar American sculpture. This piece belongs to the rare body of sculptural glass objects produced during the height of experimental studio work in Murano. The spun glass technique, with its drawn molten threads and open structural forms, reflects the same fascination with movement, transparency and line that defines Falkenstein’s sculptural practice. Functioning both as a lamp and as a luminous glass construction, it bridges the fields of design and sculpture. Its documented form, sculptural complexity and auction history place it firmly within the narrative of twentieth century studio glass. Claire Falkenstein (1908–1997) Claire Falkenstein was one of the most innovative American sculptors of the twentieth century. Her career included sculpture, jewelry, architectural commissions and experimental glasswork. Her open-form metal constructions and fused glass structures are represented in major museum collections, including MoMA, the Whitney, LACMA, SFMOMA and the Hirshhorn Museum. During the 1960s and 1970s she collaborated with the Salviati workshops in Murano, where she applied her sculptural ideas to experimental glassmaking. Works from this period are among the rarest and most sought after examples of postwar studio glass.
