About the Item

This sculptural table lamp corresponds to the Contrast model 12918, designed by Angelo Lelli for Arredoluce circa 1962 and documented in the Arredoluce – Catalogo Ragionato 1943–1987. The design belongs to a pivotal phase in Lelli’s work, when lighting was conceived as a study of spatial tension and material contrast rather than purely functional illumination. The lamp is structured around a sharply architectural, black lacquered metal body forming a vertical cube-frame. Within this rigid geometry sits a perforated aluminium spherical diffuser, its surface articulated by elongated linear cut-outs. When illuminated, these openings create a controlled, atmospheric light that emphasises depth, shadow, and volume, reinforcing the dialogue between the rectilinear housing and the organic curvature of the sphere that gives the model its name, Contrast. Subtle red accents appear in the internal mounting element and the original cube-form switch, a characteristic detail of Arredoluce production in the early 1960s. The lamp uses a standard G18 incandescent bulb housed in a mains-rated socket. The internal transformer has been replaced with a modern, correctly specified dual-voltage transformer (12V + 12V, series or parallel configuration), suitable for contemporary electrical standards while preserving the intended incandescent light quality and thermal behaviour of the original design. The aluminium diffuser shows an even, natural patina, and the lacquered metal structure retains its original finish with light wear consistent with age and use. Fully documented and model-identified, the Contrast 12918 stands as one of Angelo Lelli’s most refined sculptural lighting designs, equally compelling as a functional object and as a small architectural form.

Longobarda Ceramic Table Lamp by Marcello Cuneo for Gabbianelli 1966 Italy
By Marcello Cuneo, Gabbianelli
Located in Lisboa, PT
A bold and playful expression of Italian radical design, the Longobarda Table Lamp was created by Marcello Cuneo for Gabbianelli in 1966. Sculptural and instantly iconic, this ceramic lamp captures the spirit of the 1960s with its futuristic form, saturated color, and pop sensibility. Crafted in glazed ceramic and finished in a vivid high-gloss orange, the lamp’s fluid, monolithic silhouette is as much a light source as it is a piece of art. Its arched top curves into a flowing base, concealing the bulb and directing a warm, glowing light downward and outward — creating a dramatic effect whether lit or not. The lamp’s pure form is uninterrupted by visible seams or switches, with a hidden on/off mechanism and internal bulb placement that enhance its sculptural integrity. This particular example is in very good vintage condition, and was professionally rewired some years ago to ensure safe and functional use. Marcello Cuneo, a former collaborator of Gio Ponti, designed the Longobarda as a radical departure from traditional lighting — its silhouette evoking both ancient helmets...
