About Degué and the Art Deco Movement
This lamp is an authentic creation from Verrerie d’Art Degué, the celebrated glassworks founded by David Guéron (1892–1950) in Compiègne, about 50 miles northeast of Paris. Following the 1925 Exposition des Arts Décoratifs, which defined the Art Deco era, Guéron shifted from functional glassware to the production of decorative art glass—vases, chandeliers, and lamps of exceptional design and craftsmanship.
At his Paris gallery and workshop on Boulevard Malesherbes, Degué produced pieces that embodied the modern luxury and geometric elegance of the 1920s. His designs often featured natural motifs and brilliant colors, rendered through advanced techniques such as powdered-glass layering and sandblasting.
The brand’s success was further elevated through collaboration with renowned French ceramist Édouard Cazaux, whose bold, geometric designs in thick molded glass helped define Degué’s distinctive Art Deco aesthetic.
Degué’s work was featured in prestigious exhibitions and graced the interiors of luxury ocean liners, most notably the SS Normandie, for which the firm created over 6,000 hand-crafted glass panels—a monumental commission that showcased the height of French decorative arts.
By the late 1930s, production ceased due to economic turmoil and the outbreak of WWII, leaving behind a legacy of exceptional Art Deco lighting and glassware coveted by collectors worldwide.
