About the Item
French Art Deco Table Lamp by Edouard Cazaux for Degué, France, 1920s.
Exceptional French Art Deco table lamp designed by Edouard Cazaux and produced by Degué, France, circa 1920s.
This rare lamp features a very thick molded glass shade with a bold and highly stylized geometric Art Deco pattern, emblematic of Cazaux’s collaboration with Degué. The glass displays outstanding depth and clarity, showcasing the technical mastery of French Art Deco glassmaking. The lamp is supported by a superb hand-wrought iron base, perfectly complementing the sculptural quality of the shade.
Considered among the finest productions by Degué, this piece is in excellent condition:
No chips
No cracks
No repairs
A fine glass thread, inherent to the manufacturing techniques of the period, is visible and documented (see photo). This is not a defect but a characteristic of authentic early 20th-century molded glass.
The lamp is professionally rewired for your country (US, UK, EU, etc.) and is compatible with LED bulbs.
A museum-quality example of French Art Deco lighting, ideal for collectors of Degué glass, Edouard Cazaux designs, and 1920s decorative arts.
About Degué and Edouard Cazaux
Degué was the artistic name of David Guéron (1892–1950), an enigmatic and influential figure in French Art Deco glass. Born in Turkey to Spanish Jewish parents, Guéron settled in France after serving in the French Foreign Legion during World War I. Following the success of the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris, he established his glassworks in Compiègne, later opening Verrerie d’Art Degué in Paris.
Degué became renowned for his innovative cameo glass, internally decorated vessels, sandblasted monochrome designs, and dramatic lighting fixtures. His production included vases, bowls, perfume bottles, chandeliers, wall lights, and table lamps, many destined for elite French and American collectors. While early works were vividly colored, later production became more restrained following the economic downturn of the 1930s.
The artistic peak of Degué came through its collaboration with the celebrated French ceramist Edouard Cazaux beginning in 1928. Cazaux brought a powerful sculptural vision to Degué’s glass, creating thick molded shades with strong geometric patterns, now considered masterpieces of French Art Deco design.
Degué is internationally renowned for its prestigious commissions, most notably for the legendary French ocean liner Normandie, a floating showcase of French luxury and modern design.
Degué also achieved international recognition with its monumental commission for the ocean liner Normandie, producing over 6,000 custom glass panels for its interiors—one of the largest glass commissions of the era. Although the factory ceased operations in 1936 and closed permanently in 1939, Degué’s legacy remains central to the history of Art Deco glass.
Edouard Cazaux (1889–1974)
Edouard Cazaux was a leading French ceramist and sculptor of the Art Deco movement. Trained in Bordeaux, he gained international acclaim for his ability to merge architecture, sculpture, and decorative arts. Cazaux collaborated with many of the most prestigious manufacturers of the period, including Degué, bringing a bold, modernist language to glass and ceramics.
His designs are characterized by powerful stylization, geometric rigor, and monumental forms, perfectly aligned with the ideals of Art Deco. Today, works by Edouard Cazaux are highly sought after by collectors and are held in major museums, representing the pinnacle of French decorative arts between the wars.
