A stunning table lamp by Winkelman
Van der Bijl, crafted in the 1920s from bronze and copper, a rare find with finely executed details -. This piece is a beautiful example of Dutch applied arts, blending the expressive style of the Amsterdam School with influences from Art Nouveau, Arts
Crafts and the Vienna Secession. The sculptural details and elegant proportions echo and blend the spirits of the design movements, giving the lamp a refined and artistic presence.
The lamp is in very good condition, with a rich patina that enhances the warmth of the copper and bronze - adding character and depth without compromising its original integrity. It has been expertly rewired to meet EU standards, making it both safe and ready to use. A newly reconstructed lampshade completes the piece, staying true to its original design ethos.
This specific lamp model is considered exceptionally rare - a true collector’s object for lovers of early Dutch 20th-century design and Winkelman
van der Bijl in particular. At present, no other examples of this lamp are known to be available for sale on major platforms. A set was last seen at auction over 20 years ago, underscoring the exceptional rarity and distinctive appeal of this design in today’s market.
Background:
Founded around 1910, Winkelman
Van der Bijl was a Dutch workshop renowned for its ornamental metalwork. By 1915, the firm was producing exterior lamps and architectural ornaments for Amsterdam's iconic Scheepvaarthuis. They frequently collaborated with sculptor Hildo Krop and architects Piet Kramer and Adriaan Moen on landmark Amsterdam School projects—including public bridges, railings, and the famed Gerzon fashion house on Spuistraat.
