About the Item

A one-of-a-kind mid-century Dutch ceramic table lamp featuring a rare hand-painted Flora Gouda Lotus vase in blue and white, paired with a bespoke Liberty of London floral lampshade; newly wired with U.S. plug and ready for use. Lovingly handcrafted by Amitābha Studio in Amsterdam, this one-of-a-kind table lamp brings together two rare European design legacies that originated in the same pivotal year. The ceramic base is an original Flora Gouda vase from the Lotus series, produced in the Netherlands in 1977, during the final years of the Mid-Century Modern era. Finished in a rich, saturated blue glaze, the vase is hand-painted with a crisp white abstract frieze that wraps rhythmically around the form. This graphic motif — at once folk-inspired and modernist — reflects Flora’s distinctive late-period language, where traditional Dutch plateel techniques met bold contemporary design. Marked “Handwerk” on the base, the decoration was painted entirely by hand, making each example subtly unique. The Lotus series was introduced for only a brief production run and is now considered one of Flora’s final artisanal ceramic lines before the factory transitioned toward more industrial methods in the 1980s. Its confident palette, sculptural silhouette, and graphic ornament place it firmly within late mid-century European design, while remaining rooted in Gouda’s long decorative tradition. To complement the expressive ceramic base, we’ve created a bespoke tailored lampshade using Liberty of London’s “Marquess Garden” fabric in the Lapis colourway — an archival design that also dates to 1977. Originally conceived as a shawl print and later revived for interiors, the pattern is an Arts Crafts revival composition of densely layered florals in indigo, cobalt, and soft sky blue. Printed on cotton Chesham sateen, the fabric offers a gentle sheen and refined drape, bringing warmth and romance to the lamp’s modernist foundation. That both the vase and the Liberty design emerged independently in the same year makes this lamp an especially poetic convergence — two mid-century reinterpretations of historic floral language, now united in a single, heirloom-quality object. The lamp was created without altering or damaging the original vase in any way. It has been professionally rewired, fitted with quality brass hardware, and supplied with a U.S. plug; plug adaptation for other countries is available on request. The listed height includes the lampshade. This piece is ideal for interiors that embrace layered history and confident colour — from Eclectic and Maximalist spaces to Grandmillennial, Heritage Modern, or Parisian-style interiors where antiques and modern design coexist. ⸻ About Flora Gouda: Plateelbakkerij Flora was founded in 1945 in Gouda, the Netherlands, and became one of the country’s most forward-thinking ceramic factories during the mid-20th century. Known for bold glazes and innovative decor, Flora remained committed to hand-painted traditions well into the 1970s. The Lotus series, introduced briefly in 1977, is considered one of the company’s final artisanal achievements — combining modernist abstraction with the Dutch legacy of floral ornamentation. Each piece in the series was painted by hand, making no two exactly alike. By the 1990s, Flora had merged into Royal Goedewaagen, and the Lotus line now holds a special place as a collectible snapshot of Dutch ceramic history at a turning point in style and production. About Amitābha Studio: Amitābha Studio is an Amsterdam-based design atelier dedicated to transforming historic ceramics into one-of-a-kind lighting objects. Each lamp is crafted with deep reverence for the original form, using non-invasive methods that preserve the integrity of every antique or vintage vase. We pair these bases with bespoke lampshades—often made from luxurious textiles such as vintage sari silks or fine European fabrics—and finish each piece with carefully selected cords, fittings, and handmade brass elements. Our work is guided by a commitment to sustainability, cultural heritage, and timeless design.

Blue Neoclassical Ceramic Table Lamp, William Morris Acanthus Pleated Shade
By Morris Co., Flora Gouda
Located in AMSTERDAM, NL
This vintage ceramic table lamp was handcrafted by Amitābha Studio in Amsterdam from a rare amphora-shaped vase by Flora Gouda, part of the Porcelina series produced between 1950 and 1970. We’ve paired the base with a bespoke hand-pleated lampshade in a reinterpreted William Morris Acanthus print, and finished it with a soft blue silk cord. The lamp was created without harming the original vase in any way. The amphora form, with its fluted pedestal and graceful curves, reflects a neoclassical influence filtered through the clean, modernist lines of mid-century Dutch design. Finished in a pale, slate-toned matte glaze, the vase belongs to Flora’s Porcelina series—developed to meet shifting postwar tastes toward muted, architectural ceramics. Its powdery surface diffuses light gently, lending the lamp a quiet, sculptural quality. The lampshade’s pleated craftsmanship echoes the vase’s ribbed detailing, while the indigo and ivory palette of the William Morris textile subtly mirrors the vase’s color story. Together, the lamp and shade create a thoughtful dialogue between classical reference and 20th-century restraint. This Flora Gouda lamp...
