About the Item
An early 20th century Dutch Makkum faience table lamp, decorated in traditional polychrome with flowering vines, scrolling foliage, and stylised birds, characteristic of the long-established ceramic tradition of Makkum in Friesland.
The softly tapering baluster form is hand-painted in a rich palette of cobalt blue, iron red, green, and ochre, set against a warm cream ground. The decoration reflects the long Dutch tradition of tin-glazed earthenware influenced by Japanese Imari export porcelain, a decorative vocabulary often grouped under the broader movement of Japonisme.
Makkum pottery is renowned for its continuity of craft from the 17th century onwards, drawing on Delftware traditions while maintaining a distinct regional identity. Table lamps of this type were produced by Makkum workshops for both domestic use and export, prized for their painterly surface and decorative presence.
The lamp has been professionally converted for electrical use and is presented in good vintage condition. The shade is shown for display purposes and is optional.
A refined and decorative example of early 20th century Dutch faience. The underside bears the Royal Tichelaar Makkum factory mark confirming its provenance.
