About the Item

Here is a wonderful and LARGE lamp base by Edwin and Mary Scheier--the piece measures 25.5" in height, 8.75" in diameter at its widest and weighs approximately 16 pounds. Although this example appears to be a large vessel or vase, it was originally intended to be a lamp base. As you can tell from the glazing, there is an original hole for the cord to exit as well as a hole on the bottom of the piece for mounting on a plinth. That said, this piece could be used as a floor vase for dried or faux florals--or simply as a large, decorative object. In very good condition with no chips, cracks, visible scratches or repairs. This piece is decorated with figures in sgraffito, typical of the decoration the Scheier's became know for. Their work often employed symbols for life, birth, and rebirth. The figures applied to the thrown vessels often involve people within people, womb-like, or within animals. The Scheiers often utilized stylistic techniques learned during their time in Oaxaca. Their designs were often compared to those of Pablo Picasso and Paul Klee but ultimately, as artists, the designs were their own.
