About the Item
An Empire patinated marbelized and gilded columnar tole lamp, the column-shaped stem ending in a gilded Corinthian capital topped by a tole shade raised on a square plinth base. The interior of the shade is painted off white to maximize light.
This lamp follows a Neoclassical design, a hallmark of the French Empire style which drew heavily from ancient Greek and Roman architecture. It aimed to project French power and link it to the grandeur of ancient Rome and Egypt, evolving from Neoclassicism with lavish, imperial motifs such as eagles and laurels. The style was a deliberate political statement to glorify Napoleon's regime, portraying him as a modern-day Caesar.
