Fine French Gilt Bronze Harvest Table Lamp, Circa 1950 A beautifully sculptural French table lamp, finely cast in gilt bronze and modelled as a sheaf of harvested wheat tied at the stem, rising organically to form the lamp standard. Rich in symbolism and craftsmanship, this evocative piece celebrates abundance and rural prosperity, themes long favoured in French decorative arts. The lamp displays excellent modelling throughout, with carefully chased wheat ears and flowing leaves, retaining a warm, mellow gilt patination. Subtle green-painted accents add depth and realism, enhancing the naturalistic design. The original stem structure rises elegantly from a splayed base, providing both stability and visual balance. French harvest motifs became particularly popular in the mid-20th century, drawing inspiration from earlier Louis XVI and Empire decorative traditions, where wheat symbolised fertility, renewal and wealth. Such pieces were often found in refined Parisian interiors, country houses and hôtels particuliers, bridging classical symbolism with modern decorative taste. Harvest and wheat motifs have deep roots in French decorative art, dating back to classical antiquity and revived during the neoclassical period. In the post-war years, French designers reinterpreted these symbols in sculptural lighting and furniture, creating pieces that felt both timeless and modern. This lamp is a fine example of that tradition, marrying symbolism, craftsmanship and function. Dealers’ Comments “This is a wonderfully expressive French lamp, full of movement and charm. The quality of the bronze casting and the originality of the design make it far more than a simple lighting piece — it is a true decorative sculpture. Perfect for adding warmth and character to both traditional and contemporary interiors.” Condition Report The lamp is in very good condition throughout, consistent with age and use. The surface retains an attractive, warm patina, with light rubbing and minor wear to the gilding in places, commensurate with age and adding to its authentic character. The wheat ears and leaves are intact, with no losses or repairs observed. The lamp has been fully rewired and PAT-tested using high-quality British-made components, and is ready for use. The lampholder and fittings are secure and operate correctly. Overall, this is a well-preserved and highly decorative example, presented in excellent working order.
