About the Item

A wonderful and most unique pair of French 19th century Louis XVI st. Breche Violette marble, Ormolu and patinated Bronze lamps, signed C. Anfrie. Each charming candlestick mounted into a lamp is raised on a circular Breche Violette marble base with a concave top edge below an Ormolu and patinated Bronze socle. Above are Ormolu seashells atop wave like designs which support the patinated Bronze winged cherubs wearing flowing garments around their waists. One cherub is hold a crossbow, while the other holds arrows, and both wielding richly chased rose designed candle cups in the other. The cherub to the right wears a quiver, while each cherub is showcased with an Ormolu sash. Charming expressions and wonderful attention to detail throughout. Charles Anfrie (1833–1905) was a Paris-based French bronze sculptor known for finely modeled figurative works depicting military subjects, mythology, and everyday life in a naturalistic, academic style. He exhibited at the Paris Salon in the late 19th century, and his detailed, expressive bronzes remain sought after by collectors today.
