From our Decorative collection we are delighted to offer this French Lion Table Lamp by Louis-Albert Carvin. The table lamp cast in Bronze and cold painted with a central subject showing a Lioness and her two cubs. The Lioness is stood upon the rocky outcrop grooming her paws while she watches over her two cubs playing on the rocks. To the rear of the outcrop a bark like tree stump stems up into the light fixing which has a band of foliage decoration around the exterior. The Bronze work is signed to the left hand side L.Carvin for French metalworker Louis-Albert Carvin. The table lamp dates to the Art Deco period circa 1920. For the purpose of photography the electrics were wired and tested post photographing.
Louis-Albert Carvin (1875–1951) was a French sculptor, specialising primarily in animalier. He was known to have been active around 1900-1930 with many of his later figures featuring a single animal such as a tiger or panther.
Bronze an alloy consisting primarily of copper with approximately 12–12.5% tin and often with the addition of other metals (including aluminium, manganese, nickel, or zinc) and sometimes non-metals, such as phosphorus, or metalloids such as arsenic or silicon depending on the age of the bronze and its origin. The additions of other metals produce a range of alloys that are usually harder than copper alone and carry useful properties such as strength. The earliest known use of bronze dates to the 5th millennium BCE from Iranian plateau, the bronze mix consists of arsenical copper and copper-arsenide. The earliest tin-copper-alloy recovered is dated to circa 4650 BCE and was found in Plocnik, Serbia. It is believed to have been smelted from a natural tin-copper ore.
Cold-painted Bronze refer to sculptures produced in Vienna finished using layers of unfired “dust paint” otherwise known as polychrome paint (multi coloured).

It flourished in the United States and Europe during the 1920s to early 1930s. Through styling and design of the exterior and interior of anything from large structures to small objects, including how people look.
