A rare French Art Deco lacquered lamp base signed A. Ducobu, circa 1930. Deep black lacquer with hand applied gilded decoration of herons and reeds. Strong sculptural presence with elegant patina.
This French Art Deco lamp base is a rare signed work by the artist A. Ducobu, created around 1930 in a Parisian atelier known for refined lacquered metalwork. With its generous proportions, standing 42 cm high, approximately 16.5 inches, and 28 cm in diameter, about 11 inches, the piece has the presence of both a functional lamp and a sculptural decorative object.
The body is finished in a deep noir lacquer, enriched with hand applied gold and polychrome decoration. The stylised herons, marsh birds and tall reeds are executed with the delicate line work associated with French lacquer traditions of the interwar period. The composition wraps elegantly around the form, giving the surface a sense of rhythmic movement.
The lower section features a textured gilt surface, an intentionally worked decorative treatment typical of high quality French lacquered metal from this period. The stepped circular base, with its warm patina and concentric lines, anchors the design with classic Art Deco geometry.
The piece is signed A. Ducobu, a known French decorator who produced small runs of lacquered and gilded works during the 1925 to 1940 period. His signed objects are uncommon and appreciated by collectors of early twentieth century French design.
