About the Item

French Art Deco Table / Piano Lamp by Charles Schneider François Carion, Paris, 1910s. Rare and refined French Art Deco table or piano lamp created in the 1910s, featuring a mottled art glass shade by Charles Schneider (Epinay-sur-Seine, Paris) and an elegant hand-wrought iron fixture by François Carion (Uccle, Brussels). The glass shade showcases Schneider’s distinctive powdered glass technique, in which finely pulverized colored glass is applied between two layers, creating rich depth, texture, and luminous tonal variations. The shade is suspended within a sculptural wrought-iron mount designed by François Carion, whose ironwork is historically associated with leading Art Nouveau and Art Deco glassmakers such as Gallé, Muller Frères, and Schneider. An exceptional early 20th-century lighting object, this lamp exemplifies the collaboration between master glass artists and metalworkers during the transition from Art Nouveau to Art Deco. Origin: France / Belgium Period: 1910s Materials: Mottled art glass, wrought iron Width: 15.75 in. (40 cm) Height: 7.9 in. (20 cm) Depth: 4.3 in. (11 cm) Glass shade signed “Schneider” Iron base signed “F. Carion” (see photos) Condition Very good vintage condition, consistent with age. Professionally rewired and delivered ready for use in your country (US, UK, EU, Australia, etc.). LED compatible. A rare and highly collectible French Art Deco lamp, ideal for piano tops, consoles, or accent lighting in refined interiors. Biography – Charles Schneider (1881–1952) Charles Schneider was born on February 23, 1881, in Château-Thierry, France, and later moved to Nancy, the epicenter of the Art Nouveau movement. He trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Nancy, studying drawing and modeling under Henri Bergé, while also working at Daum from 1898, where he gained hands-on experience in glass engraving and decoration. In 1904, Schneider continued his studies at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris, focusing on painting and medal engraving. By the early 1900s, he was already an award-winning exhibitor at the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français. In 1913, Charles and his brother Ernest Schneider founded their own glassworks in Epinay-sur-Seine, later known as the Verreries Schneider. After World War I, the factory became a major force in French art glass, producing cameo glass, wheel-carved designs, and innovative techniques such as glass marquetry and colored powder applications. Schneider’s work evolved from Art Nouveau into bold Art Deco forms, often distinguished by strong contrasts, sculptural shapes, and rich coloration. His production was marketed under signatures including “Schneider,” “Le Verre Français,” and “Charder.” Much of his work was exported to the United States, where it remains highly sought after. Following financial decline after the 1929 crash, the original factory closed in 1937. Schneider later founded Cristalleries Schneider in 1950, focusing on free-blown lead crystal. He died in 1952, leaving behind one of the most influential legacies in 20th-century French decorative arts. Biography – François Carion (born 1884) François Carion, born in 1884 in Uccle, Brussels, was a highly regarded metalworker and lighting designer active in the early 20th century. He specialized in hand-forged wrought iron lamp bases and fixtures, often collaborating with leading glassmakers of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods. Carion’s ironwork is frequently associated with prestigious glass studios such as Émile Gallé, Muller Frères, and Charles Schneider, providing elegant, structurally refined mounts that perfectly complemented artistic glass shades. His designs are characterized by clean architectural lines, balanced proportions, and refined craftsmanship, making his signed works particularly desirable among collectors of period lighting. Pieces bearing the “F. Carion” signature are increasingly rare and represent an important contribution to early modern decorative lighting.
