About the Item
French mid-century ceramic lamp base by Atelier du Grand Chêne (circa 1950s). Painted with decor of a stylish woman in feathered cap and fashionable handbag, the piece is absolutely charming and delightfully representative of its era and Provençal origins. The lamp will require electrical fittings. The ceramic body however is in good overall condition. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying listing.
About the Artist: L'Atelier du Grand Chêne was founded in Vallauris, France in 1948 by Odette Roche-Gourju (1904-1954) and Ljuba Naumovitch (1898-1955). These two painters, trained notably at the Paris Ecole des Arts Décoratifs, turned out to be excellent potters after the war. They set up their pottery near a large oak tree - hence the name 'Le Grand Chêne'. There were never more than five employees including their son, Jacques Innocenti, who set up his own pottery in 1952. During the 1950s, they produced two distinct types of pottery: production runs of everyday objects decorated on a white background with animals, birds, flowers or women, and one-off pieces where the utilitarian dimension disappeared in favour of sculptural considerations. Their training as painters and their fondness for the work of De Chirico are evident in plates, dishes and vases with metaphysical decoration. After the death of Odette and Ljuba in a tragic car accident in 1955 between Nice and Antibes, their son Jacques Innocenti took over Le Grand Chêne. Their maker's mark is a stylised oak tree drawn with a brush under the glaze. (Ref: La Céramique Française des Années 50, by Pierre Staudenmeyer).

By Roger Capron
Located in London, GB
French decorative ceramic lamp with hand-painted horse by Roger Capron (circa 1950s). This is Capron's 'Coupe n°2 lamp' which is signed in the interior of the vertical base. A rare piece indeed, hand-painted with a stylised horse in his inimitable style. The ceramic is in fair overall condition showing some fading and marks commensurate with age and usage. This is an exceptional piece for admirers of the works of master ceramicist, Roger Capron. Signed: 'Capron Vallauris'. Lampshade shown in photos is 30 cm (11.8") in diameter and will be included when requested. Currently wired for usage in the UK but you can have it adapted to your location. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying the listing. Upon request a video can be provided.
About the Artist: The mid-century ceramic art of Roger Capron (1922-2006) embodied the vibrant spirit and verve of Vallauris and the French Côte d'Azur. He took over an abandoned pottery studio at the age of 24 in Vallauris, where he worked with Robert Picault and then Jean Derval. Capron’s ceramic workshop, known as "l'Atelier Callis", contributed to the renaissance of ceramics in Vallauris and at its peak employed over 120 ceramicists. He eventually expanded his production of vases, pitchers and other functional wares to include coffee tables with hand glazed tiles, lamp bases, wall plaques and other interior decor objects along with sculptural statues...

French Mid-Century Ceramic Vase by Atelier du Grand Chêne (circa 1950s) - Small
By Le Grand Chêne 1
Located in London, GB
French vintage ceramic vase by Atelier du Grand Chêne (circa 1950s). Painted with the image of a woman whose body conforms to the contour of the piece on one side and, on the other, a tulip whose long stem mimics that of the woman's neck. The ceramic is small in stature but large in charm and, at the same time, possesses a low-key sophistication reflecting the talents of the ceramicists who were initially trained as painters in Paris. The piece is in very good overall condition notwithstanding an almost invisible chip where the body meets the base. Maker's mark on the underside. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying the listing. Upon request a video will be provided.
