About the Item

Designed by Gunnar Nylund (1904–1997) for Rörstrand, this mid-century table lamp - colloquially known as “the hedgehog” - is a sculptural study in texture and form. It belongs to the 'Chamott' (Chamotte) series designed between 1936 to 1948. There are 3 forms to the Hedgehog vases which were often transformed in table lamps; this piece is the largest of the 3 available sizes at 21 cm in height (small 12cm, medium 16cm, large 21cm). Nylund became well known for his Chamotte sculptures, designing the series during his time as artistic director at Rörstrand. In very good used condition, E27 socket. Dimensions: 22 cm height. Crafted from chamotte ceramic, the body features a thick, lava-like glaze that evokes geological formations and organic decay. The lamp bears an impressed mark on the underside: “Rörstrand Sverige Chamotte Nylund.” This lamp exemplifies Nylund’s innovative approach to ceramic design, merging utility with sculptural abstraction. Its nickname, “the hedgehog,” reflects the tactile, spiny surface that made it a standout in postwar Scandinavian interiors. This is not merely a lamp - it is a landscape. A relic of Nylund’s alchemy, where utility meets poetry, and light emerges from the depths of texture.
