About the Item

Crafted from a Renaissance revival albarello, Canthos is a unique table lamp transformed from a 19th-century Italian apothecary jar, likely made between 1870 and 1885. Inspired by 17th-century pharmacy vessels, the jar is hand-painted with a cobalt and ochre portrait bust flanked by stylized wings and the inscription CANTHOS—most likely a reference to an ocular remedy. With its pronounced craquelure glaze and decorative “1684” date, this antique table lamp bridges classical medicinal traditions with the ornamental sensibilities of the late 19th century, offering a refined accent for interiors rooted in history. The jar’s design exemplifies the decorative flair of late 19th-century Italian ceramicists who sought to echo the grandeur of Renaissance pharmacies. The winged cartouche and expressive portrait reflect a fascination with early scientific artistry and religious iconography, carefully hand-painted in deep cobalt and golden ochre on a luminous ivory ground. Though unsigned, the piece reflects the high standards of Italian majolica revival ware, making it a captivating example of both aesthetic and historical significance. Paired with a drum shade in deep golden mustard dupion silk, Canthos strikes a balance between heritage and bold contemporary design. The shade’s rich, textured weave adds depth and glow, its hue echoing the ochre scrollwork on the jar below. Handmade in a European atelier, the lampshade lends a warm, ambient radiance that transforms the lamp into an inviting centerpiece. A great gift for a doctor's office, pharmacist or medical professional that appreciates medical and medicinal history, as well as wunderkammer or cabinet of curiosity enthusiasts. ⸻ Please note: The lamp is fully wired for use in the U.S. Additionally, the listed height includes the lampshade. We also ensure compatibility for global use by offering a free plug customization service to match the electrical standards of your specific country. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us! ⸻ About Deruta the Italian Renaissance Revival: About Amitābha Studio: Amitābha Studio is an Amsterdam-based design atelier dedicated to transforming historic European ceramics into one-of-a-kind lighting objects. Spanish Revival Mid-Century Benlloch Manises Ceramic Table Lamp
By Manuel Benlloch
Located in AMSTERDAM, NL
Meticulously hand-crafted by Amitābha Studio from a vintage Manuel Benlloch Manises vase, this table lamp captures the spirit of Spanish Revival design. The tall, hexagonal base is finished in an ivory crackle glaze, a hallmark of Benlloch wares, and painted freehand in a bold palette of cobalt blue, rust-orange, and cream. Its rich patterning draws on Spain’s historic Hispano-Moresque and Mudéjar traditions, translated here into a vibrant mid-century ceramic form. Each of the six faces is framed by cobalt ribs and filled with repeating ogee arches, lattice lozenges, and scrolling arabesques. The rhythmic interplay of color and geometry creates a bold yet refined surface, perfectly balancing ornament and structure. The underside bears the hand-painted signature “Benlloch España,” affirming its authenticity as a product of this renowned Manises workshop, active across three generations in the 20th century. To echo the vase’s architectural silhouette, Amitābha Studio has paired the base with a new bespoke hexagonal lampshade. Crafted in warm Dupion silk in tones of orange, peach, and gold, the fabric’s natural texture harmonizes with the arabesques on the ceramic. A Houlès passementerie trim completes the design, while the shade’s golden glow enhances the lamp’s sculptural presence when illuminated. This Spanish Revival lamp...
