About the Item
Striking pair of Japanese Art Deco lacquered wood lamps, 1930s, featuring rich vermilion red lacquer bodies set on glossy black lacquer sphere feet. Each globe is decorated with finely executed hand-painted gold and black mon (crest-style) motifs, giving them a distinctly modern yet traditional Japanese character.
The forms are fantastic-pure Deco geometry with a touch of the playful and sculptural. The spherical bodies, bold contrasting feet, and crisp graphic ornamentation echo the global Deco movement of the 1920s-30s while remaining unmistakably Japanese in material and technique.
Fully restored with new solid brass hardware, and updated wiring. The lacquer has a soft, vintage sheen with light fading and some expected wear consistent with age which comes across as a beautiful worn patina. Similar to how a good leather ages.
A rare, elegant pair-perfect for collectors of Japanese modernism, lacquerware, Art Deco, exotic revival, or early 20th-century design.
