About the Item

Magnificent late 19th century mantelpiece set, mounted as a lamp. This beautiful Athenian-style cassolette is made of chased and gilded bronze and brass with a brown patina. The central part forms a vase supported by three uprights. This Empire-style lamp is decorated with heart-shaped flowers, palmettes, and pine cones. It rests on three sheathed legs topped with winged sphinxes, connected by a triangular base. Highly decorative and elegant. Late 19th century - Empire style - France The Empire style is a style of furniture and decoration that was popular from 1803 (after the Egyptian and Italian campaigns) to 1821. It succeeded the Directoire style and preceded the Restoration style. Designed by the architects Charles Percier and Pierre Fontaine, it flourished under the direction of Napoleon I and continued after his abdication. By extension, it also designates architectural works, including imperial monuments, and propaganda art produced under Napoleon I in painting and sculpture.
