About the Item

A rather large Vintage Ceramic Table Lamp with Persian Glaze by Marianne Starck for Michael Andersen A striking vintage ceramic table lamp designed by renowned Danish artist Marianne Starck for Michael Andersen Søn. This piece showcases Starck’s celebrated Persian glazing technique—deep, textural, and beautifully nuanced—creating a surface rich with character and dimension. The details have a deep indigo blue colour contrasted with a mother-of-pearl colour. The glazing shifts elegantly in tone, giving the lamp a sculptural, almost jewel-like presence. The form is classic yet modern, making it an easy fit for a wide range of interiors, from Scandinavian and mid-century modern to contemporary or eclectic spaces. As with all of Starck’s work, the craftsmanship is exceptional, with careful attention to shape, texture, and finish. Dimensions Height (including fitting): 28.5 cm (11.22") Diameter: 12 cm (4.72") Condition Excellent vintage condition with only minimal signs of age. The glaze is beautifully preserved. A rare opportunity to acquire an iconic example of Marianne Starck’s artistry. Free worldwide shipping is provided. Information: This lamp is currently fitted with EU a standard plug. Upon request, we are happy to provide either a US or UK plug, free of charge. Please contact us prior to purchase if you would like the plug adapted to your region. It has been newly rewired and it needs an E27 screw bulb. Lamp shades are not included. Danish Keramik (Ceramics); art pottery of world standard. Danish pottery is famous world-wide due to the high quality and artistry one of the best-known companies is Søholm. Design based upon form and functionality with groundbreaking glazing technique best sums up, why they are among of the world leading firms when it comes to mid-century modern pottery design. Daniel Andersen one of the two brothers who modernised the company headed the design/art departments and developed a glaze technique which was reminiscent of one found on ancient Persian pottery. The result of this work was shown in Brussels at the World Exhibition of 1935. The glaze was well received and was awarded a gold medal. Following this success, the technique become a signature glaze known as “Persia glaze” of Michael Andersen and Sons no doubt contributing to the success the factory experienced in 1930’s and 40s and onwards. One of the most leading Scandinavian designer and artist was the famous Michael Andersen, the second brother, who made some iconic art ceramic interior design objects well into the 1960s-70s, using a modern twist when it comes to for instance his vases as well as very special glazing techniques, makes his art pottery very unique and it is now valued by the retro and vintage market all over the world. The history from a company focusing on household goods to art ceramic is old. Søholm Keramik (Ceramics), Denmark was founded by Edvard Christian Sonne and Herman Sonne Wolffsen in 1835. The original production was focusing on useful pottery plates, bowls and flasks among other items. Yet as the demand for these goods fell after the second world war, they now started to focus more and more on interior design and decoration objects. Soon they were producing a variety of pottery such as vases, lamps and wall hangings. Soon they became one of Denmark’s leading manufacturers of modern ceramics both in household goods and art and design pottery. By the 1930’s Michael Andersen and Sons of Ronne on the island of Bornholm was headed by brothers Daniel and Michael who developed the company immensely and contributed to their world-wide success . Other famous designers worth mentioning are: Marianne Starck, she was a German-born artist and became one of Denmark’s leading ceramic designers in the 20th century. She is most known for her time with the ”Michael Andersen Son” factory. Marianne's artistry is represented at numerous museums in the Nordic countries. Svend Aage Jensen, who often used the sgraffito technique and is often referred to as a master in glazes. He worked for Soholm until the 1980s and developed many of their famous designs.
