About the Item

A large and finely cast late 19th-century Japanese bronze vase from the Meiji era (1868–1912), later converted into a lamp. The vase features a dramatic bas-relief scene of a bird of prey hovering above two small rabbits, the sculptural depth heightened by a nuanced patina—rich reddish-brown on the ground and a deep greenish tone in the sky. The naturalism is further enhanced by inset glass eyes on both the bird and rabbits, exemplifying the exceptional refinement of Meiji-period bronze work. The vase has been mounted as a lamp and was not dismantled; however, given the quality of the casting, it is very likely signed on the underside. The original patina shows expected wear, including light surface scratches and minor discoloration consistent with age.
