About the Item
A heavy ceramic TOTEM lamp by Bernard Rooke, England. Mid-20th century, England.
The totem is a sculptural statement piece - floor or table size - made up of ceramic elements in natural tones of terracotta and stone. The larger circular element is decorated on each side with a small blue glass panel, and other elements feature simple markings and decoration. The piece is in good original condition, with age-appropriate signs of wear, and occasional folds, flaws and firing cracks, in line with the hand-making process.
Wiring: old wiring has been removed and you will need to replace to suit your project.

Bernard Rooke was born in 1938, and studied ceramics at Goldsmiths College in London. In 1960 he set up a workshop in Forest Hill sharing with another pottery artist, Alan Wallwork. Rooke made progressive sculptural work and early pieces were hand-made using coils and blocks. His work is found in private collections as well as museums and galleries around the world, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
